Day 23: The Daily Call to the Cross

Breaking Bread — 31-Day Devotional Journey

Scripture Reference: Luke 9:23

Elder Andrea Williams shares from Luke 9:23 on discipleship, obedience, and taking up the cross daily.

Discipleship is not a momentary decision but a daily posture of surrender. In Luke 9:23, Jesus clearly defines what it means to follow Him: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” This call confronts the natural inclination toward self-preservation and self-direction.

Taking up the cross is not symbolic convenience; it is a deliberate choice to submit personal desires, ambitions, and comfort to the will of God. Denial of self does not diminish identity but aligns it with divine purpose. God’s love is not questioned in this call—He is Abba, a faithful Father shaping His children with intention.

Daily obedience forms trust, and trust deepens relationship. When circumstances resist understanding, surrender becomes the language of faith. The cross carried daily produces endurance, humility, and clarity of mission. Luke 9:23 establishes that following Jesus is active participation, not passive belief.

Obedience strengthens spiritual maturity and positions the heart to reflect Christ faithfully. Each day presents an opportunity to choose God’s will over personal preference, forming a life that bears witness to grace, discipline, and unwavering devotion.
