Day 22: The One Thing That Is Needed
Breaking Bread — 31-Day Devotional Journey
Scripture Reference: Luke 10:38–42
Apostle Daniel McClendon shares from Luke 10:38–42 on focus, distraction, and choosing the one necessary thing.
Scripture reveals that fulfillment is not found in multiplying options but in choosing what God calls necessary. In Luke 10:38–42, two responses to Jesus are placed side by side. One is consumed with activity, the other with attention. Martha is occupied with many good things, yet Jesus identifies her condition as worry and trouble. Mary, however, chooses what Jesus names “the good part.”
This passage establishes a spiritual principle: distraction is not measured by busyness alone but by misplaced focus. God is not opposed to service, but He is committed to order. When many things compete for the heart, anxiety follows. Jesus declares that only one thing is needed, and that one thing centers the soul. God often reduces options to reveal priorities. Seasons of limitation are not signs of abandonment but invitations to alignment. What feels restrictive may be formative.
God is concerned not only with outward success but with the prosperity of the soul. Luke 10:38–42 teaches that wholeness flows from proximity, attentiveness, and choosing what God values most. When lesser options are removed, clarity emerges. Contentment is cultivated when the heart settles on the one necessary thing that cannot be taken away.
